What is the difference between an independent variable and a controlled variable?
Q. I know that an independent variable in an experiment is the variable that remains the same, and the dependent variable is the variable effected by the independent variable. So, my question is.. if a controlled variable is a variable that remains "constant" or the same, what is the difference?

A. A controlled variable could change, but it will change the same for all treatments. For instance, if you add different amounts of water to plants (independent variable) and measure growth (dependent variable) and you grow them in a greenhouse, the amount of light will be a controlled variable (the light will vary and it will affect plant growth, but it will affect the independent and dependent variable the same). This way you can attribute changes you observe to the independent variable. I hope that makes some sense.

How do independent architects find projects to bid on?
Q. I'm not an architect but I've noticed there are alot of small independent outfits out there. How do they find clients? Why would someone go to them instead of a bigger well established firm?

A. Previous answerer: Good guess. You are partially right, architects do rely on networking to bring in new clients. Its not as glamorous as "rubbing elbows in the Hamptons", though. You did ask about smaller firms. Most smaller firms get their initial jobs because they have working relationships with larger firms (usually because the smaller firm's members use to work for the larger firm). From time to time, at least when the economy was better, the larger firm might have a job that it was too busy to do, it thought was too small, or knew wouldn't pay enough. The larger firm does the smaller firm a favor by passing this work on to them. This is how the small firm begins to build a project portfolio. By working on these cast-off… [cont.]

How could an independent party ever win a presidential election?
Q. What if you had a republican pres candidate and a dem vice, or vice versa? Would people go for that? Or even a straight independent...is money the issue. I think this is something we need, conservative republicans' ideas seem old and outdated while liberal democrats are simply socialist leaning loons.

A. It's pointless to have a third-party president until that party has some representation in Congress. But it's not impossible for a third party to get there. I mean, 160 years ago the Republicans were a third party.
